The History of our Championship Golf Course
Okefenokee Country Club was established on January 29, 1923, as Waycross Golf Club located in the city limits of Waycross, GA. In 1935 the name was changed to Okefenokee Country Club. The Club was moved to its current location in 1977. The 18-hole Championship Golf Course was built in 1977 by Joseph L. Lee. It is laid on natural southern Georgia terrain back dropped by ancient oaks and towering pines. The Spanish moss hanging from the gnarled old oaks sways in the summer breezes. The beautiful Satilla River comes into view as it “snakes” its way along a few holes.
Lee is the designer of some of the nation’s finest courses: the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, LA Costa Resort and Spa in San Diego, California, site of the PGA Tour Mercedes Championship and Cog Hill Golf Club in Chicago, IL., site of the PGA Tour Motorola Western Open, to name a few. It should not come as a surprise if one day the PGA holds an event here.
